Realistic Self Defense

East West Martial Arts teaches techniques that would work in a real situation.  There are no rules on the street, and you have to be prepared for anything that could happen, which includes punching, kicking, takedowns, ground grappling, as well as multiple attackers and weapons.

Almost all self-defense situations start standing, but most end up in close and on the ground.  Therefore our main focus is ground grappling, which is based on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Grappling Classes

Our Jiu-Jitsu classes are divided into gi and no gi training. The gi is the uniform, which is similar to a winter coat, sweatshirt, or jacket.  In Michigan, people are wearing more than a t-shirt most of the year.  We want our students to be able to defend themselves whether an attacker has clothing to easily grab onto or not.

  • For ground grappling, we offer Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ).  BJJ is a submission based art, which means that an attacker would be put in a choke, which would result in them going to sleep, or a joint lock, which could can immobilize an attacker or break the joint.  BJJ practitioners also have the option of striking, or just tying up an opponent where they are rendered helpless.
  • To focus on takedowns with the gi, we offer Judo.  Judo practitioners specialize in throwing and preventing being thrown when there is clothing to grab onto.
  • For takedowns where there is nothing to grab onto (no gi), we offer Wrestling.

Non Grappling Classes

Though most self defense situations end up in close and on the ground, all of them start standing.  For those interested in stand up training, we offer:

  • For striking using kicks, punches, elbows, and knees, as well as clinch work and self defense, we offer East West Stand UpEast West Stand Up combines several arts such as Muay Thai, Boxing, and Wrestling, as well elements from traditional Karate and Kung Fu.
  • For those who want to improve with punching and punch defense, we offer Boxing.
  • For those who want to develop skills using and defending weapons, we offer  Modern Arnis.
  • For those who want a really intense cardio and strength workout that would prepare them for an intense competition, we offer Strength & Conditioning for MMA.

In addition to getting prepared for any type of realistic self defense situation, the mix of these classes gives a great cross training workout!

And one of the greatest things about martial arts training is the wide range of benefits.  Besides learning an art form and getting in shape, students develop confidence, greater focus, stress release, and develop a disciplined lifestyle.

Please note:

You do not have to already be in shape to join. Our classes will get you in shape! They are a great cross training workout, and may students find the workout far more interesting than a treadmill or lifting weights.

You do not need previous experience to start. We offer several classes that are only for beginners, as well as all levels classes. Students find our instructors patient and very helpful. We do not choose our teachers only based on just physical ability. They must be patient, good communicators, like teaching, and have in depth knowledge of their art in order to teach at East West.

Do not let fear of getting hurt or embarrassed stop you. We train by the Machado creed, “Leave your ego at the door.” Our goal is to develop your confidence by learning the basics first, then gradually working your way into sparring. Students do sparring when they are ready and want to spar standing and on the ground. And we have found that students learn better when they are having fun.
